Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins First Championship in Over Two Years

19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been earned on hardcourt

A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his first title for over two years with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the tournament title decider.

Medvedev, a former top-ranked player, has experienced a challenging year, managing just one win at the big events and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

His inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serve in particular - led to him exiting of the world's top 10 and ultimately parting ways with former mentor Cervara.

Presently working with Johansson and Goetzke, he has gradually advanced in the last few weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought competitive victory over opponent Moutet.

This represents his maiden title following the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hard surface since that period of the previous year.

Success also indicates he has secured 21 titles at twenty-one different competitions.

"It's the first time I am participating in a competition with my two daughters together, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," stated tennis professional Medvedev.

"This title is in tribute of my second daughter Victoria, because the first title I got when my first daughter her name was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the past champion, had lost his previous six finals, including in Halle in the past months.

Medvedev's defensive approach and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had led some to doubt if his ability to compete at the elite level was over.

But the player has altered his approach in recent weeks, striving to advance forward and play positively, backed up by an improved service.

The champion fought back from a break down in the initial set against the tricky Moutet, securing 4 of the concluding five exchanges to go ahead.

Both players exchanged breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, bidding for his initial ATP Tour title, gained dominance to push for a third set.

The opponent defended 4 initial break points in a competitive deciding set before the Russian broke to fifteen to serve for the match.

Suitably, he earned the title with a point at the net, with the Frenchman failing to handle a shot after over two and a half hours.
