EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
