Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
